About Us


To foster a statewide system of exemplary out-of-school programs and resources to support the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of Virginia’s children and youth.


All children and youth in Virginia have access to high quality out-of-school time that prepares them to be successful in school, work, and life.


Why we formed

A core group of key stakeholders in Virginia began meeting in April 2009 to begin the process of identifying individuals from different sectors, agencies, departments, and levels of government who have expertise in the field Out-of-School Time (OST). Our goal is to bring together representatives from the governor’s office, state education agency, child care, health, labor, youth development, juvenile justice, statewide associations, and the private sector to create cross-agency collaboration to promote quality OST programs throughout Virginia.

Who is the Partnership for Out-of-School Time

Currently key stakeholders include representative from Virginia Department of Education, Commission on Youth, Fairfax County Public Schools, James Madison University, Office for Early Childhood Development, Voices of Virginia’s Children, Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, Alternatives, Inc., Virginia School Board Association, The Virginia Alliance of YMCA’s, Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, Virginia Commonwealth University, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Danville Area, King George YMCA, Richmond Public Schools and Child Care Aware of Virginia. This working group has adopted the name of Virginia Partnership for Out-of-School Time (VPOST).

Benefits & Outcomes

Quality OST opportunities in Virginia will support state goals in education, economic development, prevention, and other arenas by providing safe, structured learning environments for students outside the regular school day. OSTs include afterschool and summer learning programs as well as before-school, evening, and weekend programs. Nearly two decades of national research show that investments in high quality OST programs can produce the following benefits and outcomes:
