Minority Children are Missing Out
Parents of nearly 5.7 million Black children want afterschool programs for their child. This includes the more than 1.3 million Black children who are participating in programs and the 4.3 million who are notbut who would be if one were available to them. Of this overall demand, 3 in 4 (76%) Black children whose parents want them in a program are missing out, leaving millions of children who would likely participate without access to a program.
Parents of 8.9 million Hispanic children want afterschool programs for their child. This includes the more than 1.9 million Hispanic children who pare participating in programs and the almost 7 million children who are not but would be if one were available to them. Of this overall demand, nearly 4 in 5 (78%) Hispanic children whose parents want them in a program are missing out.
Behind the Demand
Black and Hispanic parents recognize the benefits of afterschool for children, working families, and their communities. Nearly the majority of Black and Hispanic parents (88%) agree that all young people deserve access to quality afterschool and summer programs.



About the Survey
America After 3pm is a national online survey of parents or guardians of school-aged children, with supplemental interviews conducted by telephone. The fifth edition of America After 3PM surveyed 30,515 U.S. parents or guardians with a school-age child living in their household, including 4,781 Hispanic households, and 4,377 Black households, between January 31 and April 21, 2025.
